Lymphodema management

The aim of this management plan is to bring the body to as stable and normal a situation as possible.

This consists of:

Treatment plan for existing or long term lymphedema:

Phase 1 – Intensive treatment

  • Frequent MLD®  sessions with bandaging and  laser therapy
  • Deep breathing, exercise and skin care to be practiced at home
  • Commence nightly bed elevation for leg lymphoedema
  • Correct resting elevation  as often as possible

Phase 2 – Maintenance Program

  • Wearing compression garments as prescribed
  • Continue exercise, skincare, and elevation
  • Regular MLD®   treatments to prevent further development of lymphoedema

You may be at risk of developing Lymphoedema – early warning symptoms may include:

  • restricted movements
  • feeling of fullness
  • pressure
  • heaviness
  • tingling
  • tightness
  • swelling that comes and goes
  • feeling of tiredness

Risk factors include:

  1. having had treatment for cancer
  2. having had surgery to remove tumors and lymph nodes
  3. undergone  radiotherapy treatment
  4. accidents, cuts, burns, insect or reptile bites

Other factors that can increase the  risk of swelling

  • tight clothing
  • weight gain
  • inappropriate exercise
  • alcohol
  • smoking
  • high blood pressure
  • cardiovascular / kidney  disease
  • therapeutic drug medication

This specialized technique uses precise movements of the skin to activate the lymph vessels which respond by pumping harder and faster. By this action MLD has a profound effect on lymphatic transport, literally suctioning the tissues like a vacuum cleaner, removing wastes, excess fluid and moving immune elements more effectively to where they are needed.
